When We Met
This is a film made to raise awareness for male victims of domestic abuse and for the DYN Project - a helpline service for the victims. The video was made as part of a project called "Persuasion" (part of my uni course) to help companies and organisations better communicate the importance of their messages.
When We Met
‘Persuasion’ - To create a convincing campaign or solution promoting a charity or business in Wales. The company should appear to require some help with their communication. In my case, it was to design a campaign to spread awareness of The DYN Project, an independent helpline service for male victims of domestic abuse.
Domestic abuse among men is prone to not be taken as seriously as among women. Furthermore, there are much less services readily available for male victims meaning lots of victims have trouble knowing where or who to turn to. This project aims to spread the awareness of The DYN Project so that victims know that these services are available.
I responded to the brief with a short live-action film titled ‘When We Met’. The film personifies the voice of a man who reminisces over his first impression upon meeting his partner through three different couples.
These impressions are told to lull the audience into a false sense of security before the video takes a sudden twist. As the film progresses, we learn that the relationships on screen are not what we thought they were - the male is being abused. The structure used is an intellectual montage which uses a non-linear narrative with unpredictable sudden imagery. The aim of this is to create an effect that makes the audience feel unpleasant and scared as to mirror the trauma of abuse.
